Heart and diabetes checks

High blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes may develop without causing obvious symptoms. A heart and diabetes check can help identify your risk and give you practical steps for protecting your long-term health.

The age at which these checks should begin depends on your ethnicity, medical history and other risk factors. Men without known risk factors are generally advised to begin heart and diabetes checks at 45. Earlier checks are recommended for Māori, Pacific and South Asian men, and for people with certain risk factors. Our team can advise when a check is appropriate for you.

Prostate and testicular health

Changes in your urinary or reproductive health can sometimes feel difficult to discuss, but they are a normal part of healthcare.

Please make an appointment if you notice:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • A weaker urine flow
  • Needing to urinate more frequently, particularly overnight
  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Blood in your urine
  • A lump, swelling or change in a testicle
  • Ongoing pain in your testicles, groin or lower abdomen

A PSA blood test may be used to help assess prostate health, but it is not automatically suitable for everyone. Our clinical team can explain its potential benefits and limitations and help you make an informed choice based on your age, symptoms, family history and personal risk.

Mental wellbeing

Mental health is an important part of your overall wellbeing.

Stress, low mood, anxiety, poor sleep and major life changes can affect anyone. You do not have to wait until things become overwhelming before asking for help. Our team provides a confidential place to talk about what you are experiencing and discuss the support available.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 111. You can also call or text 1737 at any time to speak with a trained counsellor.

Why regular health checks matter

Many health conditions develop gradually and are easier to manage when identified early.

A health check is an opportunity to review your blood pressure, heart and diabetes risk, mental wellbeing and any changes you have noticed. It also gives you time to ask questions and discuss any concerns, even if they seem minor.

Costs

Standard consultation fees apply to most men’s health appointments. Additional charges may apply for procedures, tests or other services.
